In France, the Gauthier (Go-TEE-AY) name represents a long tradition of fine winemaking. Although I’ve yet to fully explore my genealogical connection, the spirit of that tradition inspires and directs my quest. The history of Gauthier in wine can be traced from The Champagne Region in the 1800s, to Cognac through the 1900s and the Loire Valley today. But my roots and passion for winemaking are strictly All American.
I have always been driven by the brotherhood of the grape. I have been blessed and inspired by my two close friends and mentors: Rodney Strong, founder of Rodney Strong Vineyards and Mike Richmond, co-founder of Acacia Winery. I have been guided by their example to continue to pursue my dream of making great wine. Rodney Strong enabled me to study winemaking through extension classes at the University of California, Davis. I continued to refine my skills under the collaborative mentoring of many noted winemakers such as Rick Sayer of Rodney Strong Vineyards, Dan Carlson, formerly of Chalone Vineyards, and Ted Seghesio of Seghesio Vineyards.
In 2002, with the acquisition of three tons of Los Carneros Pinot Noir, Gauthier Select Vineyards was founded. Now in our 10th year of operation, we offer award winning Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. I travel widely and taste wines avidly and extensively to collect and transform “wine wisdom” into the wines of Gauthier Select Vineyards.
